Barbara Dayer Gallati is an American art historian and museum curator specializing in nineteenth- and early twentieth-century American painting. She holds a Ph.D. in art history from the Graduate School and University Center of the City of New York, and for many years served as Curator of American Art at the Brooklyn Museum, later becoming curator emerita; she also taught on the art history faculty at the School of Visual Arts in New York.
Gallati built her reputation as a leading scholar of Gilded Age American portraiture and of artists such as William Merritt Chase and John Singer Sargent. She has organized major museum exhibitions, including Making American Taste: Narrative Art for a New Democracy for the New-York Historical Society, and has contributed essays to important catalogues accompanying exhibitions on Sargent at institutions like the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Barbara Dayer Gallati is an independent scholar and Brooklyn Museum's Curator of American Art.
Her published monographs, including a well-regarded study of William Merritt Chase and books such as Beauty's Legacy: Gilded Age Portraits in America, are considered standard scholarly references in the field of American art history. Because of her long curatorial career and her authoritative writing on major American painters, works bearing her authorship or scholarly contribution are valued by collectors and institutions with an interest in the history and connoisseurship of American art from the Gilded Age through the early twentieth century.
