David Miles Lusk is a relief printmaker based in Montana, working out of Missoula and, more recently, Alberton. He received his Bachelor of Fine Arts with an emphasis in printmaking from the University of Montana in 2014, and started Anomal Press in the fall of 2016, the imprint under which he produces and sells his hand-carved editions.
Lusk's work centers on wildlife and the natural world, and he is inspired by the intersection of science and mythology, and nature & humanity. Each of his prints is a laborious, entirely hand-made object: every design is drawn, carved, and printed by hand, reflecting his stated philosophy that relief printmaking is both an art and a craft, with each project involving research and keen observation. His subjects range widely across regional flora and fauna, from otters and elk to turtles, mushrooms, and butterflies, often rendered in tightly worked, textured black-and-white compositions that show a naturalist's attention to anatomy and pattern.
Beyond his own print practice, Lusk has built a reputation in the Missoula arts community as a working studio artist and small-press publisher, exhibiting locally and giving public demonstrations of his carving and printing techniques. Because his editions are hand-carved and hand-pulled in limited numbered runs rather than mass-produced, individual prints carry the appeal of genuine studio craftsmanship, making early or notable editions of his nature-themed relief prints attractive to collectors interested in contemporary American printmaking with a regional, naturalist sensibility.
