Shane Slayer was an American artist based in Oregon, known for decades as a fixture of the Pacific Northwest arts and crafts fair circuit, particularly the Eugene Saturday Market, where he became a well known Market artist. Working primarily in pen-and-ink, often finished with delicate hand coloring, he specialized in richly detailed wildlife and fantasy subjects, from soaring eagles and dolphins to dragons, unicorns, and tender studies of arctic animals. Shane Slayer has been a self-supporting artist since he was released from the military in the 1970s, building a career entirely on the strength of his own market sales and commissions rather than gallery representation.
His pieces from the 1980s and 1990s, typically signed and dated by hand, circulate today as sought-after vintage finds among collectors of outsider and folk-adjacent American illustration art. The dense cross-hatching technique he favored, paired with soft, almost pastel washes of color, gave his animal portraits a distinctive warmth that set them apart from more commercial wildlife prints of the era. He was a prolific artist, poet and writer, interacting with many people throughout the Pacific Northwest at various events featuring his artwork and poetry for over 40 years.
Slayer passed away in 2023, and he is remembered as a legendary artist and poet among those who knew his work firsthand at regional markets and fairs.
