This graceful, 2" leaf- or flame-shaped brooch showcases Siamese niello work, a centuries-old Thai silversmithing technique in which a design is deeply engraved into sterling silver and then filled with niello — a blackened alloy of metals and sulfur — so the fine white-line imagery reads crisply against a rich, matte black ground. Here the scene depicts a dynamic figure in mid-stride, drawing a bow and wearing the tall, pointed crown typical of costumes from Thai classical dance-drama, most likely a character from the Ramakien, Thailand's national epic adapted from the Indian Ramayana. Niello silver of this kind became one of Thailand's signature export crafts in the mid-20th century, historically centered in the southern city of Nakhon Si Thammarat, and was prized by Western visitors and servicemen for its dramatic contrast and storytelling detail. The gently curved, asymmetrical form of this piece gives it real movement on the body, and the mythological subject makes it a strong addition for collectors of Southeast Asian silver, niello ware, or narrative jewelry. The reverse is stamped "Made in Siam, Sterling."
